Is coverage available outside of Texas?

No, the JUA policy coverage is limited to the State of Texas.

Who is eligible for coverage?

The JUA offers medical professional liability insurance as the insurer of last resort. Eligible health care providers and facilities are determined by the Texas Department of Insurance and are subject to change. Currently, the following are eligible for coverage: physicians, surgeons, podiatrists, dentists, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, CRNAs, nurse midwives, hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.

How can I obtain a quote and what will the quote be based on?

Applications completed in detail must be submitted along with all additional information as requested. Actual premiums are based upon information contained in the application and any other correspondence submitted.

How can I obtain an application form?

Refer to the Applications tab.

Who can submit an application form?

You can submit your completed application directly to the Underwriting Manager or utilize your personal insurance agent.

Why does the first question on the application ask about rejecting companies?

The JUA was established as a temporary solution for health care providers who are unable to obtain coverage in the standard insurance market. You become eligible for coverage through the JUA only when two insurers in the admitted market have rejected your application or coverage. These rejections must be evidenced only by copies of valid notifications from the carriers and must be submitted with the completed application.

If I currently have coverage with the JUA and need to renew that coverage, do I still need rejecting companies?

Yes, every time you apply with the JUA, two new rejections by carriers licensed and engaged in writing in Texas the coverage applied for must be obtained.

When can coverage be effective?

The earliest possible date for new coverage to be bound is the day after receipt in our office of the completed application along with a cashier’s check, bank draft, or postal money order in the amount of a least the minimum deposit and all required information. If you are renewing your policy, the completed application, payment for the full amount quoted, and all mandatory information must be received in our office prior to the expiration date of your current policy. The complete submission will be automatically returned if all mandatory items are not received, late receipt of the application and appropriate check will cause a gap in coverage.

Payment of premium must be made by cashier's check and must accompany the application. Other forms of payment, including personal checks, agency checks, ACH, or electronic fund transfers can not be accepted.

When do I send in the premium payment?

A cashier’s check, bank draft, or money order in the amount of at least the deposit must be submitted before coverage can be bound. If the full amount of the premium is not submitted before binding, the remainder of the premium must be paid within 20 days after the issuance of the policy. If you have current coverage with the JUA and need to renew your coverage, the full amount of the premium quoted must be submitted in the form of a cashier’s check, bank draft, or postal money order prior to the expiration of your current coverage.

You may submit your completed application form and application attachments by USPS or any other mail service you prefer to the address at the top of the application form or by email attachment to the JUA Underwriting Manager. Also, for other application forms as discussed under the Products tab of the website or for questions, please contact the Underwriting Manager.
